Certificate II in Retail
This course is for people who want to work in a retail sales and service environment at a junior level. Students will learn how to communicate effectively with colleagues and customers, apply safe working practices and perform stock control and point-of-sale procedures. You will also learn how to minimise theft, operate retail technology and work effectively in a retail environment.
This qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent in a range of activities and functions requiring basic retail operational knowledge and limited practical skills in a defined context.
The qualification is suitable for an Australian apprenticeship pathway and for VET in Schools delivery. Students are able to earn an industry recognised Certificate II in Retail with the option of two units being contributed to their University Admissions Index.

There are no formal educational entry requirements for this course.
Career opportunities/vocational outcomes
Include but not limited to sales assistant, crew member, checkout operator and customer service representative.
Program Articulation
Students who successfully complete this course are able to gain articulation into SIR30207 Certificate III in Retail or obtain an advanced standing in SIR20107 Certificate II in Community Pharmacy.
Program Duration
Full Time: 3 months
Part Time: 6 months

Course Commencement
Courses commence in February, April, July and September each year for full time and part time applicants.
Delivery Methods
This course is delivered through face to face classroom learning or by correspondence.
Assessment Methods
Students may be required to sit written and oral exams, participate in practical activities, complete assignments, presentations, vocational projects and role plays.
Students undertaking a course as part of a work based traineeship will be assessed in the workplace.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Participants with previous training and/or experience may apply for RPL. Participants who have completed courses with equivalent / matching learning outcomes, will be granted credit transfer.

Qualifications granted by Australian Academy are accredited by the Queensland Government through the Department of Education, Training and the Arts. This program is nationally recognised under the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF). National Training Provider No: 31716
Course Structure
To achieve a Certificate II in Retail the qualification packaging rules requires completion of 14 units:
- all 9 core units
- 3 units from either elective units on general selling or elective units on general food selling as listed in the Training package
- 2 elective units:
- A maximum of 2 elective units may be selected from the Training package suggested Elective Units
- A maximum of 2 elective units may be selected from another endorsed Training Package. These must be units which are packaged within a Certificate II or III qualification in the parent Training Package.
In all cases selection of electives must be guided by the job outcome sought, local industry requirements and the characteristics of this qualification.
This course has been designed to reflect the packaging requirements of the Certificate II in Retail SIR20207 from the Retail Services Training Package SIR07.
