Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety
This course is for anyone already responsible for OH&S issues and training, and safety representatives who require the skills and formal qualification to carry out their duties and increase their knowledge and involvement in OHS application and policy-making in Australian workplaces.
This course is also for those who wish to pursue a career in OH&S in NSW and for those who wish to become WorkCover trainers and assessors, human resource staff, safety officers or OH&S officers with significant OH&S responsibilities
The course may also be relevant for: - Personnel who implement various stages of an OH&S system, quality officers, insurance companies, risk managers, physiotherapists, and rehabilitation officers as well as those specialising in particular aspects of OH&S inspection, consultation, training etc.
Entry requirements
There are no prerequisites for this course however it is desired that candidates enter the qualification through a number of entry points demonstrating potential to undertake vocational education and training at certificate level, including:
- after achieving the BSB30707 Certificate III in Occupational Health and Safety or other relevant Certificate III qualification
- or providing evidence of competency in the majority of units required for the BSB30707 Certificate III in Occupational Health and Safety
- or with extensive vocational experience in occupational health and safety roles, vocational experience may include employment as an OHS representative, OHS committee member or Health and Safety assistant
Career opportunities/vocational outcomes
Include but not limited to health and safety representative, Entry-level OH&S officer or supervisor with a major workload in OH&S, WorkCover trainer.
Program Articulation
Students who successfully complete the Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety are able to gain articulation into BSB51307 Diploma of Occupational Health & Safety.

Full Time: 6 months
Part Time: 12 months

Course Commencement
Courses commence in February, April, July and September each year for full time and part time applicants.
Delivery Methods
This course is delivered through face to face classroom learning or by correspondence.
Assessment Methods
Students may be required to sit written and oral exams, participate in practical activities, complete assignments, presentations, vocational projects and role plays.
Students undertaking a course as part of a work based traineeship will be assessed in the workplace.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Participants with previous training and/or experience may apply for RPL. Participants, who have completed courses with equivalent / matching learning outcomes, will be granted credit transfer.
Accreditation
Qualifications granted by Australian Academy are accredited by the Queensland Government through the Department of Education, Training and the Arts. This program is nationally recognised under the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF).

Course Structure
To achieve a certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety, the qualification packaging rules requires completion of 9 units:
- 6 occupational health and safety units
- plus 3 elective units:
- at least 2 of the elective units must be selected from the remaining occupational health and safety units or the Training package suggested elective units
- The other elective unit may be selected from the remaining occupational health and safety units, the remaining elective units, anywhere else in the BSB07 Business Services Training Package or any other currently endorsed National Training Package, of which 1 unit may be selected from a Certificate III or Diploma qualification.
Units selected from other Training Packages must not duplicate units selected from or available within the BSB07 Business Services Training
This course has been designed to reflect the packaging requirements of the Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety BSB41407 from the Business Services Training Package BSB07.
In all cases selection of electives must be guided by the job outcome sought, local industry requirements and the characteristics of this qualification.
