Certificate IV in Financial Services (Bookkeeping)
The Certificate IV in Financial Services (Bookkeeping) is designed for people seeking a career as a professional contract bookkeeper, or permanent paid bookkeeper, either working under the direction of a tax agent/public accountant, for a bookkeeping business or franchise, as a permanent paid bookkeeper (working for enterprise), or in their own bookkeeping business.
The Certificate IV in Financial Services (Bookkeeping) offers practical training in bookkeeping ethics, cash and accrual accounting systems, payroll, BAS and IAS statements as well as computerised accounting.
Entry requirements
Where the industry core units have been demonstrated as a requirement of Certificate III in Financial Services exemption is provided, alternatively the following applies:
- Industry experience,
- sound language/literacy skills and
- basic computer skills including (Word, Excel and Access)

Program Duration
Full Time: 12 months
Part Time: 24 months
Course Commencement
Courses commence in February, April, July and September each year for full time and part time applicants.
Delivery Methods
This course is delivered through face to face classroom learning, onsite at your workplace or by correspondence.
Assessment Methods
Students may be required to sit written and oral exams, participate in practical activities, complete assignments, presentations, vocational projects and role plays.
Students undertaking a course as part of a work based traineeship will be assessed in the workplace.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Participants with previous training and/or experience may apply for (RPL). Participants, who have completed courses with equivalent / matching learning outcomes, will be granted credit transfer.
Course Structure
To attain a FNS40207 Certificate IV in Financial Services (Bookkeeping) 13 units must be achieved:
- 4 industry core units, plus
- 7 sectoral core units, plus
- 2 elective units.
This qualification reflects the role of individuals who use well-developed skills and a broad knowledge base in a wide variety of contexts and environments. They apply solutions to a defined range of problems, and analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources in relation to a variety of tasks. They may provide guidance to others with some limited responsibility for the output of others.
This qualification is designed to reflect the role of contract bookkeepers and employees performing in the role of bookkeeper for organisations and who perform duties such as:
- establishing and maintaining accounting systems
- assisting with Business Activity Statements and other office taxes
- payroll
- developing management systems for organisations.
